Dr. Benjamin S. Shaffer, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy, with particular expertise in problems of the shoulder, elbow and knee. He is an associate clinical professor of orthopaedics at Georgetown University and George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Shaffer is currently an Orthopaedic Consultant to the Washington Capitals and their affiliate Hershey Bears, and has served as their Head Team Physician and Medical Director for fifteen years, from 1999 to 2014. He is a former Head Team Physician and Medical Director for the Washington Nationals, Washington Freedom and Georgetown University Hoyas, and has served as assistant Team Physician for the Washington Wizards. He is past president of the NHL Team Physician Society, and is currently an at-large board member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA).
Dr. Shaffer has authored more than 50 textbook chapters and peer-reviewed journal publications. He lectures and teaches extensively, including co-chairing both regional and national level orthopaedic and sports medicine meetings.
Dr. Shaffer is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
