Knee Replacement
What is a knee replacement?
A total knee replacement is a surgical procedure to replace the knee joint, which usually has been damaged by arthritis. By using a metal prosthesis to replicate the motion of the knee, orthopaedic surgeons can alleviate pain and symptoms associated with arthritic knees. Knee replacement surgery is the most common joint replacement surgery performed by orthopaedic surgeons in the United States.
Am I a good candidate for a knee replacement?
You’re a good candidate for a knee replacement if:
- Your knee pain prevents you from enjoying regular, routine activities
- Your knee pain wakes you up at night
- Physical therapy and other conventional treatments have failed at controlling your knee pain
What are the benefits of a knee replacement?
The benefits of a knee replacement are that you will be able to return to your normal, everyday activities, as well as mild sports that you enjoy.
What can I expect from a knee replacement?

- A complete pre-operative workup that will focus on preparing you for your minimally invasive knee surgery
- One to two hour surgery
- Two to three day-long stay in the hospital, with physical therapy beginning the day following surgery
- Pain management protocol, decreasing dependence on pain medication every few days
- Six weeks of physical therapy
