Reverse Shoulder Replacement

What is a reverse shoulder replacement?

The decision to do a reverse shoulder replacement is made on diagnostic criteria, based on the patient’s ability to move his or her shoulder. Typically, reverse shoulder replacements are performed for patients who cannot raise their arms. Further, they suffer from torn rotator cuffs and arthritis.

Our surgeons perform this unique procedure arthroscopically, using small incisions and a tiny camera to visualize the delicate connections in the shoulder area.

Am I a good candidate for a reverse shoulder replacement?

Only your orthopaedic surgeon can determine if you are a good candidate for reverse shoulder replacement. Generally, patients have the following signs and symptoms:

  • They cannot raise their arms above their head
  • Their rotator cuffs are torn
  • Their X-rays show they have arthritis

What are the benefits of a reverse shoulder replacement?

Good candidates for reverse shoulder replacements are those that have rotator cuff disease and arthritis. The benefits of reverse shoulder replacements are that you can return to your normal, everyday functions. Further, because we perform the surgery arthroscopically, your incisions are smaller and recovery is generally faster.

What can I expect from a reverse total shoulder replacement?

After initial evaluation, your surgeon will determine the appropriate course of treatment. You can expect the following from a reverse shoulder replacement:

  • A complete pre-operative workup that will focus on preparing you for your reverse shoulder replacement
  • One to two hour surgery
  • Two to three day-long stay in the hospital, with physical therapy beginning the day following surgery
  • Pain management protocol, decreasing dependence on pain medication every few days
  • Six weeks of physical therapy
  • A return to normal, routine activities within six to twelve weeks following surgery
