Findings from a study published in the August issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM) suggest that an injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is not superior to placebo for treating chronic Achilles tendinopathy. The authors conducted a randomized, controlled trial of 54 patients aged 18 to 70 years with chronic tendinopathy 2 to 7 cm proximal to the Achilles tendon insertion. In addition to an eccentric training program, patients received blinded injections of either PRP or saline. At 1-year follow-up, no significant difference in improvement was found between the groups, and 59 percent of patients in each group were satisfied with the received treatment.
