Mainstream press looks at joint replacement trends
An Associated Press article looks at the trend toward joint replacement in younger patients. The article states that knee replacement surgeries have doubled during the last decade and more than tripled in the 45-to-64 age group during that time. Observers say that the trend can be credited largely to increasing expectations among younger patients who wish to remain active as they age. "The [baby] boomers are the first generation trying to stay active in droves on an aging frame," says Nicholas A. DiNubile, MD, who was interviewed for the article, "and are less willing to use a cane or put up with pain or stiffness as their grandparents did." The article also features comments from Ronald W. Hillock, MD, William J. Robb III, MD, and Norman S. Schachar, MD. (From AAOS Headline News May 23, 2011)
