Minimally Invasive Knee Replacement

What is a minimally invasive knee replacement?

A knee replacement surgery involves your surgeon replacing the diseased knee joint with a metal prosthesis. A minimally invasive knee replacement involves the replacement of the knee joint, but using a three to four inch incision instead of an eight-inch incision. This has many benefits, including a shorter recovery time, less pain and reduced change of infection.

Am I a good candidate for a minimally invasive knee replacement?

You are a good candidate for a minimally invasive knee replacement if you are in relatively good shape and health.  A minimally invasive knee replacement is an option no matter your age.

What are the benefits of a minimally invasive knee replacement?

The benefits of a minimally invasive knee replacement include:

  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Fast recovery
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Fewer muscles and tendons are cut, leading to less pain and blood loss

What can I expect from a minimally invasive knee replacement?

After initial evaluation, your surgeon will determine the appropriate course of treatment.  You can expect the following from a minimally invasive knee replacement:

  • A complete pre-operative workup that will focus on preparing you for your minimally invasive knee surgery
  • One to two hour surgery
  • Two to three day-long stay in the hospital, with physical therapy beginning the day following surgery
  • Pain management protocol, decreasing dependence on pain medication every few days
  • Six weeks of physical therapy
  • A return to normal, routine activities within six to twelve weeks following surgery
